about
Words such as these are not always the easiest to write - double consciousness often comes into play and you begin to question yourself, your purpose. But these words are for my people. Don't let anyone steal your precious energy.
Special shoutout to Erykah Badu, Billie Holiday, Angela Davis, D' Angelo, Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, James Brown, Alice Walker and Georgia Anne Muldrow - Thank You for paving the way. Thank You for inspiring this song. Thank you for using your words to speak out and speak up.
Now what if there wasn't no niggas, just master teachers?
And what if there wasn't no rappers, only preachers?
Would you eat what they feed you?
And would you let them beset you?
Would you let them box you up and put that price on ya back?
$19.49 thats including the state sales tax
For the money sell ya soul to that confederate flag
Now Wheres this consciousness you speak of?
Told me its hidden in the reefer
And I can smell it in the air like them dark bodies swinging from the poplar tree
And i can feel it in my bones as i become everything they told me not to be
Now wheres this consciousness you speak of?
Told me its hidden in the reefer
Throw that fluoride in ya drink to censor everything you think
Fuck up a third time and then they sentence you to life
This ain’t no game baby, but you keep playin' baby
Same rope they throw you Is the one you hang from baby
Now wheres this consciousness you speak of?
Told me its hidden in the reefer
Cuz it aint nothing quite like this country of mine
Where a nigga gets shot by a cop at the drop of a dimeBag
Its sad cuz thats really where we at
Yeah thats really where we at
Now wheres this consciousness you speak of?
Told me its hidden in the reefer
Where is this consciousness?
(Where’s this consciousness)
x4
But You keep rappin' bout the trap cuz you trapped
And thats exactly where they want you at
Liberate yourself, don't let em steal your mental health
Cuz its the white ones with the wealth who benefit off what you sell
Throw you in jail, taking away your right to freedom
Shackle you in chains, as if thats really proper treatment
Im not a preacher but i had to let it out
In the name of those before me like Nina Simone and James Brown
Im black and proud yeah yeah I’m black and proud
Im black and proud yeah yeah I’m black and loud
And if u got a problem
You can sit the fuck down
Now wheres this consciousness you speak of?
Told me its hidden in the reefer

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
in a place much worse then most music can catch in/on to, am streaming the album until the music can. have more faith in Hiatus Kaiyote as soundallies then a presenter could assume or guess. I love you all significantly, there's a mango honey vape, thc9 bluerazzgummies and organic cigarettes if you come through however🙏. BeatsaNdBuds
